Community groups are furious over the cost overrun and potential health risks of the new Roosevelt Middle School.
Originally budgeted at $45 million, officials say the 11-acre middle school project will now cost at least $10 million over that mark. Additionally, state officials say the site, which used to house a Nassau County storage facility for mosquito control equipment, is contaminated with pesticides.
With cost overruns and environmental problems, school representatives tell the community the middle school will not open in September as initially scheduled. Instead, the new opening date is tentatively scheduled for September of 2008. High school renovations are also being delayed due to the funding issues.
