News 12 is taking a look at the historic
Apollo Theater in this week's Road Trip: Close to Home.
Step inside the one and only Apollo Theater, the Harlem-based stage where some say the soul of America was born. Executive producer Kamilah Forbes gave News 12 a firsthand look.
"We are a vibrant nonprofit performing arts center. So, with that being said, we have the best and the brightest celebrating Black culture 365 days out of the year. I love to see that not just for February but every month out of the year," says Forbes. "The building is a national treasure. We are celebrating her 80th birthday."
Some of the biggest names have stepped up to the mic, including Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Alicia Keys and more.
There is still room for so many other performers to have their turn as well. In honor of Black History Month, the Apollo's Amateur Night tradition, the longest running talent show, is returning Feb. 16.
"Nothing can replace that feeling you get when the lights dim low, and an artist is about to step on stage, and you feel the rise and bustling of the audience. We are excited to welcome people back because it is something special that happens, not only across America, but particularly in the Apollo Theater," says Forbes.
Forbes hopes after the tough pandemic times, audience members from all over will come visit.
