A celebration happened today in Elmont as a road near UBS Arena was named in honor of the New York Islanders.
In celebration of the partnership between the Town of Hempstead and the beloved Islanders - Red Road was renamed New York Islanders Way. It marks the more than 50 years the Islanders have played in the township.
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin joined the Islanders and UBS Arena officials to rename the road.
The Islanders played at Nassau Coliseum from 1972 to 2015 -- then moved to Barclays Center in Brooklyn for three seasons before splitting games between the arenas from 2018 to 2020.
The official unveiling of "New York Islanders Way" was held at 11 a.m. with the team's mascot ‘Sparky the Dragon’ joining in the celebration.
