Town officials say they want to put the brakes on future solar farming in Riverhead.
Riverhead had previously negotiated discounted tax rates for two solar farms being built in Calverton. The town is now proposing taxing solar developers at the town's full tax rate, in the hopes it will slow down the number of solar farms in Riverhead.
Some residents say the solar farms would take away from the character of the rural area. Others say solar power is a great alternative energy and don't mind how it looks.
Town officials will hold a meeting to vote on the proposal on April 21.
Last year, the town changed the zoning to allow solar panels only on industrial zoned land, not on agricultural zoned land.
