The Riptide are set to leave Nassau Coliseum and move to Ottawa when their season ends, according to an announcement made Wednesday morning.
This is the fourth season for the indoor lacrosse team founded in 2018.
The Riptide averaged less than 5,000 tickets per game.
The team issued a letter to fans and season ticket holders addressing the news. It read in part, “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Long Island community. For the past five years, we have had the honor of calling Long Island our home and the privilege of playing at the iconic Nassau Coliseum.”
The National Lacrosse League also announced the launch of the Ottawa Black Bears franchise, the Riptide's relocation.
“This is an immense opportunity for our League to fortify our roots in the National Capital Region and to partner with a sophisticated front office in the Senators. We feel this relationship will be a terrific success and are excited and confident in the short- and long-term positioning of the Ottawa Black Bears," said NLL Commissioner Brett Frood.
General manager Rich Lisk declined an interview with News 12 as to why the team is leaving.
