A Ridge man was sentenced to 1 ½ to 4 ½ years in prison in the fatal hit-and-run of his pregnant girlfriend.
John Lang, 31, pleaded guilty in the death of Mary Ginty. Prosecutors say Lang ran her over as she walked along Miller Place Road in Miller Place in 2019, then fled the scene.
He was arrested hours later at his home and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence. Prosecutors couldn’t prove that Lang intended to kill Ginty.
Ginty’s family told News 12 after the court proceedings that Lang got off lightly. Her mother, Elizabeth Ginty McNeill, said her only daughter had revealed to her that she was pregnant just three days before she died.
“He will never be charged with what he truly deserves,” she said. “He left her to die in the street. He murdered her, and unfortunately the constraints of the law – he couldn't be charged with what he really did. And we all know what he did. Everybody knows what he did. And he just got away with murder."
Lang apologized in court, saying that not a day will go by that he will not regret the consequences of his actions on that day. He also waived his right to an appeal.
