Farmingdale is celebrating a multimillion-dollar, transit-oriented project with hopes that it will revitalize its downtown area.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for a mixed-use project that includes apartments and retail space -- all within walking distance from Main Street and the Long Island Rail Road station.
The revitalized zone includes a Starbucks coffee shop, beer gardens and other retailers.
The 400 planned apartments include affordable housing, which will make up 10 percent of the units offered. Those affordable units could run as much as $1,700 a month.
The goal is to appeal to Long Island's younger generation and keep them from leaving.
More housing units in the village are expected to become available by this summer.
