A national hospital review board made an unannounced visit to Mercy Medical Center Wednesday to address the latest complaint of poor patient care.
The review board, the Joint Commission, says the spot check was necessary following the most recent complaint. The board previously issued the hospital 22 recommendations for improvement following earlier complaints targeted against the facility.
Dr. Anthony Colantonio, who works at Mercy and has come out with complaints about the care, says if the hospital doesn?t pass the spot test it could lose its accreditation.
The Joint Commission says it could take up to a week to determine the findings of the surprise visit. The group also says it expects to return to Mercy next month to check up on the recommendations that it previously issued.
In a statement, a spokesperson from Mercy says Wednesday?s visit was part of an ongoing review and the hospital is cooperating fully.
