Friday marked Flag Day, but it turns out that many people don't know how to properly dispose of a U.S. flag when it's faded, tattered or torn.

It was June 14, 1777 when the Second Continental Congress adopted the stars and stripes that have been proudly flown for the past 242 years.

And Friday in Huntington, there was a flag-retiring ceremony -- but not all are retired properly. Many end up in the garbage, as seen by a pile of flags collected by drivers for Winters Bros. Waste Systems.

The West Babylon company collects the discarded flags, and then folds them, boxes them up and sends them to an American Legion post where they can be properly retired.

For anyone with a flag that can no longer be flown, your best bet is to find an American Legion hall for proper disposal.
