A local hero has passed away after making the ultimate sacrifice.

Retired State Police Sgt. Michael Piro, of Calverton, died on Tuesday from a 9/11-related illness.

State Police tell News 12 Sgt. Piro was last assigned to Troop L in Riverside, before retiring in 2015.

Wake services will be held Friday at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Piro will be laid to rest on Saturday at St. Isodore Church.

He was just 63 years old.
