At around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, a retaining wall collapsed at 125 Landscape Ave. trapping one person in a vehicle below. Yonkers Fire Department confirmed the person was able to exit the vehicle with minor injuries. Pace University assistant professor Matthew Aiello-Lammens says the collapse is not necessarily unusual this time of year, especially with recent rain and snowfall.
"The water seeps into the soil, and the soil is kind of heavy. It increases what is called the hydrostatic pressure so it pushes everything around it out. In this case, there was a retaining wall that had been holding back the soil, but as that soil pushes out, it starts pushing towards that retaining wall," he said.
If there was not a proper drainage system, he added that the freeze-thaw cycle with recent water could have also had an effect on putting pressure on the wall, causing it to collapse.
The city has confirmed cleanup is the responsibility of the homeowner.
