Residents on the South Fork say a property owned by North Sea should remain preserved, not sold and developed as suggested by Southampton Town officials.
The 10 acres at 36 Cedar Lane, also known as the Conklin property, were acquired by the town in 2006 using $1.5 million in proceeds from its Community Preservation Fund and Community Housing Opportunity Fund.
The town of Southampton owns the property on Cedar Lane and wants to divide it up and sell some of the lots to developers for housing.
Supervisor Jay Schneiderman says he only wants to sell about 2 of the 10 acres. He told News 12 Long Island that the money would be used toward building affordable housing in a different area.
The property is made up of wetland and rare white cedar trees. Residents say the area is not appropriate for development and say legal action could be filed if the plan moves forward.
A town meeting on the issue is set for Nov. 22.
