About 250 Long Island residents laced up their shoes and hit the road for a good cause in Wantagh on Sunday.
The residents participated in the AMT Children of Hope Foundation's annual TJ 5K Run Walk in Mill Pond Park.
Retired Nassau County Police paramedic Timothy Jaccard started the foundation and is also behind the Safe Haven law, which passed in all 50 states. The law allows a woman to surrender her baby anonymously without facing prosecution.
"As of this past Friday, there are 3,159 babies that have been safely relinquished in the US. On that, 12 here locally in Nassau and Suffolk County," he says.
The money raised from Sunday's event will help fund the nonprofit's crisis centers. They also have a hotline that a person can call anytime of the day or night if they need help.
