Plans to open a combination gun range and full-service spa met resistance from Lynbrook residents late last month, and a petition to stop the move is gaining traction.
The project would place the facility where Cutler's Lighting now stands on Sunrise Highway. It would include an indoor gun and archery range and a firearm and ammunition retail shop, along with a hair and nail salon.
A lot of people who live nearby say they are concerned about safety, potential noise and extra traffic. Resident Dom Lavin says residents first learned the property was up for sale in March. He says when residents heard what was proposed to take over the site, they immediately started a petition.
So far, organizers say they have more than 1,200 signatures on a petition against the sport spa.
Lynbrook Village is still considering the project. Mayor Bill Hendrick says he understands residents' concerns and that he personally opposes the idea.
"We make our decisions here with our citizens, with our business, about what we need," Hendrick says.
Pamela Newman, the woman behind the proposed sport spa, did not immediately return News 12's request for comment.
The village has scheduled a hearing on the proposal for May 2.
