Some Long Island residents are asking lawmakers to change a policy that is preventing thousands of amputees from receiving the prosthetic devices they need.
Dan Bastian, owner of Progressive Orthotics & Prosthetics, has been fitting patients with prosthetic arms and legs since losing his leg to cancer. He says he recently discovered the Affordable Care Act only covers one prosthetic for adults for life and does not cover repairs to that prosthetic.
Bastian says he set up an online petition to pressure lawmakers to change the law.
He says maintaining, fixing and replacing prosthetics costs at least $6,000.
Bastian says that as people age, their bodies change and they may need new prosthetics.
