Some residents in the Town of Brookhaven are pushing back against a plan to reduce the number of parking spots available for boat trailers.
According to boaters and fisherman, the plan will take away 15 to 20 spots that are used for parking the boat trailers.
The boaters say it's already tough to get a spot here in the summer, and add that taking away 20 of the 50 spots is unacceptable.
"This is a boating community and we need this space. As it is, there is very limited parking," said Kevin Brunet, of Port Jefferson.
Officials confirm there is a mutual agreement for the change between the Town of Brookhaven and the Village of Port Jefferson. The village and town also confirm the parking lot switch is linked to the sale of a building, which Brookhaven recently sold to a developer.
The parking lot swap was made because the building did not have enough parking to meet village zoning requirements.
The Port Jefferson mayor released a statement saying three public hearings on the project were held in the summer of 2014.
Residents opposed to the parking lot change say they will attend the next Port Jefferson Village Board of Trustees meeting to be held April 4 at 7 p.m. to voice their concerns.
