The recent terror attacks on Israel by Hamas created a heavy feeling Monday afternoon throughout the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center in Greenvale.
Long Islanders were invited to join the "Long Island Stands with Israel" gathering Monday afternoon, organized by leaders at the nonprofit organization.
"Most people can't speak without crying. Most people – when they start to talk about it get choked up,” said executive director David Black. “We have a Center for Israel here, we have a number of representatives working with us from Israel in the community, they are all affected. Some actually being called back to go to their military units."
The gathering gave religious leaders and leaders in the community the chance to come together with elected officials to discuss the impact the war in Israel is having on Long Islanders. A member of the JCC currently in Israel also provided real time updates.
Black encouraged those who couldn't attend but would like to offer help to "learn the facts. What actually happened? Why did it happen? What organizations are helping those who are most affected?"
A second "Long Island Stands with Israel" gathering will take place at the Commack Jewish Community Center today at 4 p.m.
