Some East End residents are fighting for a lower speed limit on what they say is a dangerous stretch of road.
They have been complaining for years about the speed limit on Sound Shore Road in the hamlet of Northville. Residents say the windy road and speeding drivers have caused many accidents. They are asking the Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit because of the danger it poses.
"It's a very curvy, hilly road," says Linda Prizer, president of the Northville Civic Association. "As you're driving...you can't see what's coming at you."
Residents say the call to lower the speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph has been a 10-year fight. Supervisor Sean Walter says he favors lowering the speed limit, but is disappointed it took years for the state to consider it.
The state Department of Transportation issued a statement Thursdsay saying that it "determined the reduced speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph was appropriate for Sound Shore Road."
A hearing on the issue is scheduled for Nov. 15 at Riverhead Town Hall.
