The federal government is considering the creation of a new biodefense lab on Plum Island, despite assurances from Long Island politicians that it won't happen.
Plum Island, which stands off the North Fork shore, is on a list of six potential sites for the government to build a Bio 4 research center. As a Bio 4 center, the most deadly biological pathogens would be studied. The island already hosts the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, which is a Bio 3 level lab, meaning it deals with slightly less dangerous materials.
Southold residents met at Town Hall Thursday night, where most in attendance voiced fear and criticism about the project.
Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY) maintains the Bio 4 lab won't be built on the East End. Plum Island's name remains on the list of candidates because the law requires it to be there, Bishop said.
"I have received assurances from two secretaries at the Department of Homeland Security that they will not build at Plum Island," he said.
