Reproductive rights groups held a rally Saturday in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Hundreds gathered at Resistance Corner in Port Jefferson to let lawmakers know how they feel.
“We're here to say this right-wing extremist Supreme Court will not have the last word with what happens to our bodies,” said Shoshanna Hershkowitz, of Suffolk Progressives.
In New York, a woman's right to choose abortion will remain, even though around half of our nation's states will now limit abortions because of the Supreme Courts actions.
“I'm out here 'cause I'm 15 and I lost the right to my own body before I could get behind the wheel of a car and that's not OK,” added Maya MacCarthy.
George Frost from the Long Island Coalition for Life told News 12 he was gratified that the Supreme court voted 6-3 to overturn Roe and give the power to regulate abortions back to the states. He knows that in New York, access to abortion has been codified into law but now worries about so called “abortion tourists" coming from other states further increasing the abortion rate here.
“I'm afraid that you may have an influx of people into New York state looking for abortions, so that bothers me,” he said.
Bettina Niederer, a former physician, says she remembers treating women and seeing them die in the times before legal abortions and now worries about seeing that again.
“It’s heartbreaking,” she said. “I wish people would just understand what they've done and what's going to happen in this country.”
