A new report shows that many homeowners in Suffolk and Nassau counties have not yet recovered after being hit hard during the foreclosure crisis.

The report from the Empire Justice Center shows that Hempstead, Roosevelt, Elmont, Uniondale and Freeport in Nassau - as well as Wyandanch, Brentwood and Central Islip in Suffolk - have had high denial rates for lending. Also, very few applicants are being offered conventional mortgages.

"It has affected everyone across all lines, economically, racially. We've noticed it has affected a lot of minority homeowners," said Garry Johnson, of the NAACP.

The NAACP partnered with Ocwen Financial for an event in Uniondale Saturday called "Help and Hope for Homeowners," which gave Long Islanders who are in mortgage trouble the opportunity to meet with financial counselors.

"We want to help them stay in their homes, resolve their delinquency, stay away from foreclosure," says Max Nieves, of Ocwen Financial.
