More than 3,000 unaccompanied child refugees are already on Long Island, but more are reportedly expected to arrive soon.
According to a report by the Migration Policy Institute, another 39,000 child immigrants are expected to arrive in the U.S. by the end of the year.
It's not known how many are headed to the Island, but more are expected during the summer. Many will live with relatives or sponsors. Experts blame worsening conditions in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
Hempstead schools were overwhelmed with 1,200 new students in September. District officials want someone to tell them approximately how many kids they can expect so they can 'better prepare.'
