Big changes could be on the horizon for Nassau's school zone speed cameras.
Bowing to public pressure, County Executive Ed Mangano announced Wednesday that starting Monday, the cameras will only operate four hours a day -- 7 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.
Democrats in the Nassau Legislature say the executive did not go far enough. Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams, who initially voted for the cameras, filed legislation Thursday to permanently shut them down, saying the county has mismanaged the program.
"We all believe that our school zones need to be safer for our motorists and our pedestrians, but this program has been an abomination from day one," said Abrahams.
Even some Republicans are considering a repeal, but Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves is worried about how to replace the $30 million in revenue that the cameras were supposed to generate for the county budget. She's holding back on her party's repeal bill until she gets some answers.
Legislators say they hope to discuss the possibility of ending the speed zone camera program next month.
