Ailing Long Island hospitals will need to look elsewhere to get better as proposed federal and state budgets include cuts to health care funding.
U.S. Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) says President Bush has made a serious mistake by trying to lower funding to hospitals. Nassau University Medical Center officials say they could lose $75 million with the cuts, which would stop vital services and programs from being offered. Winthrop University Hospital could be in even worse shape, where officials say the non-profit medical center could lose $530 million over the next five years. Winthrop officials say they face losing another $7 million in state funding with Governor Eliot Spitzer's (D-NY) new budget.
McCarthy says she and others will be lobbying hard in Washington to change the president's mind and reverse the imminent cuts.
