Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-4th District) is receiving words of encouragement from fellow Long Islanders following her announcement that she has lung cancer.

The 16-year veteran of Congress announced the news in a press release yesterday. McCarthy didn't specify what stage the cancer was, only that it was treatable.

Mike Magerko, a lung cancer patient and survivor from Coram , says the best way to beat cancer is to not give up and remain positive throughout the entire experience.

McCarthy acknowledged that she will have to miss activities in Washington during her treatment in New York. She says that her staff will support the needs of her constituents during that time.
