Rep. King speaks in NH, mulls presidential run
For the 12th time in the last 20 months, Republican Congressman Peter King, of Seaford, traveled to the first-in-the-nation primary voting state of New Hampshire this week, sparking talk of a potential presidential run.
Rep. King (R-2nd District) delivered a pair of speeches, including one at the Republican Leadership Summit in Nashua, New Hampshire.
So, is he running for president? "I'm still looking at it," he said. "To be honest with you, the response has been good. I think there could be an opening."
The 2016 Republican field is already crowded. Senators Ted Cruz, of Texas; Rand Paul, of Kentucky; and Marco Rubio, of Florida, have already announced their presidential bids, and a host of others plan to make announcements in the coming weeks.
King believes there still may be room. "If I can fill a gap and there are people that want to support me, then I'll definitely look at it," he said.
But King readily admits that he may not be able to raise enough money. Still, he wants the GOP primary to feature a candidate to counter Tea Party "darlings" like Cruz and Paul. It is a role that former Republican Florida Gov. Jeb Bush or Sen. Rubio could play. If they don't, King may.
"We can't have candidates going around saying the enemy is the CIA," said King.
King would have to win over voters in New Hampshire if he does decide to run for president, and reaction was mixed when News 12 asked Long Islanders.
King plans to make his decision by the summer.
