A new poll suggests many Americans don't agree with a U.S. decision to not consider a travel ban yet in the fight against Ebola. Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) is among some pushing for that ban.
"A person from West Africa coming to the United States would have to have a visa, and that visa would be suspended and that person would not be allowed to enter the United States," he says. "So, overseas airports would know that anyone with a West African visa would not board a flight to the U.S."
The Ebola outbreak has killed more than 4,000 people in West Africa. So far in the U.S., two nurses who treated an Ebola victim from Liberia in Dallas have been infected.
There are no direct flights from West Africa to the United States, but five American airports are now screening people who have been on connecting flights from the area. Every day, about 70-100 people arrive at John F. Kennedy International Airport on flights that originated in countries struggling with the deadly disease. Rep. King says the screening protocols are inadequate.
