State Assembly Member Steve Englebright is fighting for an overpass to make an intersection near Nicolls Road safer.
Englebright is hoping to add the overpass to a reconstruction project that is already happening on Route 347 near Stony Brook University.
Englebright says he has been calling for the overpass at the intersection for decades and now is the time to make it happen.
He says adding an overpass would do more than just alleviate traffic jams, saying it would also improve safety for drivers and pedestrians, many of whom are Stony Brook University students and staff.
"We've lost a number of people to accidents at this intersection," Englebright said.
He estimates adding the overpass to the plans would mean an additional cost of at least $30 million to $60 million.
There is no word yet on when or if the overpass will be added to the state's plan for the rest of the redesign of Route 347.
