A record number of illegal guns are being taken off the streets of Suffolk County.
Suffolk police say they have recovered more than 230 guns this year, according to Newsday.
The department is on pace to shatter a record for the most guns seized in one year.
The department's commissioner, Timothy Sini, is crediting a new firearms suppression team for the progress. He also says the department is adding an additional FAST team.
"We've had a renewed focus on preventing and decreasing firearm violence in Suffolk County," Sini says.
Police say many of the guns are trafficked from out of state or linked to gang violence.
