Recent fatal shootings shake Brooklyn communities as NYPD data shows overall decline in violence

A series of fatal shootings across Brooklyn over the past week has heightened concerns among residents as the summer season continues, even as police data shows shootings remain lower than this time last year.
Officials say that homicides tend to peak during the summer months. But earlier this summer, Brooklyn saw encouraging signs.
The borough recorded just two homicides in July, tying the record for the fewest killings in any month. Brooklyn also went 29 consecutive days without a murder, marking the longest such streak on record.
But that progress has been overshadowed by a string of deadly incidents in August.
In East New York, 17-year-old Ahmir Jordan was fatally shot in the head. Police are still searching for the suspects.
Two days later, approximately a mile and a half away, a 27-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest during what investigators believe may have been a road rage incident.
Then early Sunday morning, two employees of a fast-food restaurant in Brownsville were shot inside the business. One of the victims later died at the hospital.
The incidents have left some residents concerned about safety despite overall crime trends.
"It's kind of crazy. Most people would be out in the summer, and when you're out in the summer, anything is likely to happen," said Keith Edwards. "Nowhere is safe."
Others said the violence does not reflect what they experience in their neighborhoods on a daily basis.
"Because I haven't actually witnessed anything, it's been kind of peaceful besides hearing certain things on the news," said Kevin. "Other than that, in my neighborhood, I haven't heard too much."
"They always say East New York is bad, but I don't think it's bad," said Lorrie. "There's always a couple of bad apples."
Despite the recent violence, NYPD data collected before this past week's incidents shows shooting incidents are down 18% citywide compared with the same period last year.
A total of 131 shootings had been reported so far this year as of last week, compared with 160 during the same timeframe in 2025.
Residents say the statistics are encouraging, but each loss of life still has a significant impact on families and communities.
A City Hall spokesperson issued a statement to News 12.
“The recent violence that young New Yorkers have fallen victim to is deeply alarming and a painful reminder that, despite real progress driving down crime citywide, our work is far from finished. Deputy Mayor for Community Safety Renita Francois is convening agencies and community partners on an ongoing basis to concentrate resources and coordinate interventions in specific corridors across the city, including in the Bronx and East New York. The Deputy Mayor is working with ONS, NYPD, DSS, DSNY, DOT, Parks, NYCHA and other partners to bring additional resources to areas that could use them the most. As these interventions are deployed, we are tracking community engagement, service connections, conflicts identified and mediated and changes in neighborhood conditions to assess their impact and inform our ongoing response," the spokesperson wrote.
As Brooklyn moves through what is traditionally the deadliest time of the year, community members say they hope to see continued progress and even greater reductions in gun violence.
