News 12 reached out to the Town of Huntington for clarification about what officials are doing to address rats running rampant in downtown Huntington.
They say they have been working with the Suffolk County Department of Health for more than a week to find the source of the rat infestation.
Viewer video shows more than a dozen rats running across a lawn on West Carver Street right near New York Avenue, not far from restaurants and homes.
The town supervisor says he has been speaking with building and restaurant owners to fix the problem.
News 12 viewers say they’re seeing the rats, commenting on News 12’s social media posts saying:
“One night walking on West Carver Street we saw about 50 rats running in the street."
"Finally, somebody acknowledged and reported this. Every time I go down there, I see those rats, it’s worse at night."
Restaurant managers say they hope the situation gets handled quickly.
“The guests come out, they dine on our patio, and for you to see little critters running around the street, it’s not exactly appealing, so it would be nice if they were gone," said Kelly Romandi, manager of The Shed.
Romandi says the county Health Department came to inspect the area, and there is no issue at her restaurant.
“To see them across the street the first time was definitely very startling," she said.
Town officials say if the source of the infestation turns out to be on private property, it will be the property owner’s responsibility to get rid of the rats.
News 12 reached out to the Suffolk County Health Department for comment and is waiting to hear back.
