Over the next few weeks, Brookhaven National Laboratory plans to move 4,000 cubic yards of radioactive soil off the Island on freight trains.
The soil will travel on the LIRR?s main rail line past Floral Park and other villages on its way out to Utah for disposal. Both environmental and lab experts agree the safest way for the soil to travel is by rail.
However, some residents who live alongside the soil?s rail path say they don?t like the idea of radioactive waste being transported through their communities.
Floral Park Village Mayor Phil Guarnieri says he didn?t receive any notification about the soil traveling through the area. He says dozens of his residents are worried about their safety and security.
The LIRR says the entire project is being conducted by the New York and Atlantic Freight companies, who ensured that full safety precautions will be taken. Brookhaven National Laboratory says the shipments are safe because the radioactivity of the material is very low.
