Dozens of Long Islanders headed to Queens Saturday to honor the nine victims of the deadly church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.
More than 300 people, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, gathered for a rally and march at the Greater Allen Cathedral of New York, an African Methodist Episcopal church in Jamaica. Greater Allen is a sister location of the church involved in the South Carolina shooting.
Pastors, clergy members and community leaders discussed the tragedy with the church's congregation. They say they cannot understand why 21-year-old Dylann Roof - who sat with church members for an hour during bible study - would commit such an act.
Church members of Greater Allen say they gathered to remember and honor the nine victims, and to also come together to heal.
After the service, church members walked four blocks to St. Albans Memorial Park, where they participated in a rally to decry racism and hate.
