Pump Patrol: Average price of gas per gallon on LI hits $3.83
Prices for gas are increasing across Long Island as crude oil prices soared to $111 a barrel Wednesday.
President Joe Biden says the United States and its allies have agreed to release 60 million barrels from their reserves to make prices cheaper at the pump.
The average price of gas on Long Island is $3.83, which is 10 cents more than a week ago and 34 cents more than a month ago.
"I think it's ridiculous," says Hicksville resident Brian Caroll. "I don't know how. It's not sustainable. There's no end in sight. It's disturbing."
Spokesperson for AAA Robert Sinclair says prices could get worse before they get better.
"This Russia Ukraine situation, if it keeps up, if there's actually some interruption in supply, things could get a lot worse," Sinclair says. "Russia is the third largest producer of crude oil in the world."
He says diesel futures on Diesel Market Mercantile Exchange jumped 34.3 cents Wednesday, which is the largest jump ever.
This is happening as trucks are being need more to deliver supplies to empty shelves as inflation has also been a recent problem.
The cheapest gas on Long Island is in Suffolk County for $3.23 at Montauk Native Gasoline in Mastic, according to Gas Buddy.
In Nassau County, the cheapest gas is $3.43 at Speedway on Elmont Road in Elmont.
Sinclair urges people to slow down because the engine has to work harder to overcome extra wind resistance when vehicles go above 55 mph.
