Long Islanders are pitching in to help the victims of Hurricane Maria – a storm that decimated the Caribbean islands, leaving many homeless and without power. 

Yerbabruja Arts Center director Margarita Espada started a donation drive for the victims, collecting water and non-perishable food and other supplies. She say the effort is keeping her busy while she waits to hear from her mother, daughter and brother in Puerto Rico. 

"I've had no communication with them since Day 1," says Espada. 

Miguel Moreno, an FDNY disaster response volunteer from Long Island, is heading to Puerto Rico with the American Red Cross on Sunday. He hasn't heard from his family on the island either.

"It's bad, it's extremely bad," says Moreno. "They will rebuild. The Puerto Rican heart is a big heart." 

The Yerbabruja Arts Center, located at 63 Carleton Ave., will be collecting goods from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sunday. Radio station WBON will also have a drop-off site for donations at their Ronkonkoma office.
