Mayor Zohran Mamdani is following through on his promise to open five city-run grocery stores across the city.

The goal is to provide affordable, high-quality food options in neighborhoods where many struggle with food insecurity and rely on public assistance.

The first location revealed will be in East Harlem, in an empty lot on Park Avenue between 117th and 118th streets. That location, according to the mayor, will be open in 2029, along with all five city-run grocery stores.

The first location will open by the end of 2027, but that address has not yet been revealed.

The stores will offer subsidized core baskets of staple items that will be significantly cheaper than products seen in traditional stores.

Mamdani also said the employees of the grocery stores will be hired under 'union standards.'

The city also says they will listen to the community so the food in the store reflects what they eat.

City officials tell News 12 they have already allocated $70 million for the construction of the five stores. They say $30 million of that money will go towards the Harlem location.

It is unclear which location will be the first to open.
