PSEG Long Island is asking customers to be mindful of power consumption as the Island copes with a third day of hot temperatures.
The utility is asking customers not to run air conditioners at full blast and instead to use fans instead to cool off.
The utility is urging for nonessential electric use because two of its power cables are out and a third is at half capacity.
Michael Sullivan, PSEG LI senior director of transmission and distribution, explains that the two cables come from Westchester County to Hempstead under the Long Island Sound, with some having experienced some age-related problems.
With the heat index over 100 degrees, the utility is asking for the public's help.
The utility has not made such a request in 20 years.
Sullivan says they don't anticipate rolling brown-outs or blackouts, but they want customers to be proactive.
Sullivan advises customers to run some fans instead of the air conditioner, close the curtains and blinds to keep the sunlight from coming into the house to help stay cool.
PSEG Long Island says the peak urgency to conserve is until 7 p.m. but they are not expecting to issue the same warning on Saturday.
