Long Islanders took to the streets of Mineola Monday to protest President Bush's latest Supreme Court nominee. The protest is part of a nationwide demonstration against Judge Samuel Alito as he goes before the Senate Judiciary Committee for day one of confirmation hearings. Alito, who is a federal appeals judge in Philadelphia, has a conservative track record. Back in 1985, he wrote that he doesn't believe the constitution supports abortion rights. The protesters say they are upset about Alito's record on abortion, affirmative action and civil rights. Some Democrats, including State Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), have threatened to filibuster to block Alito's approval. Before the hearings, Bush said Alito deserves a fair chance because he's a qualified candidate.
