Protesters made their voices heard Wednesday night outside Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's rally at Grumman Studios in Bethpage, and two people inside the venue wound up getting arrested.
The hundreds of demonstrators gathered in a so-called free speech zone set up by Nassau County police outside the studios along South Oyster Bay Road.
They began gathering late Wednesday afternoon, hours before Trump took the stage. With signs in hand, the protesters said they were rallying in peace, but their message was clear.
"Donald Trump has been putting out hate messages about women, Muslims and immigrants," said Lisa Tyson, of the Long Island Progressive Coalition. "We want to say that that is not what Long Islanders believe, and this rhetoric has to stop."
Acting Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said there were several hundred uniformed and plainclothes officers present at the rally to keep the peace. In the end, he said two people inside the event were arrested following some sort of "physical altercation."
Police also said that more than a dozen people, mostly senior citizens, were treated for exhaustion and dehydration.
The security measures cost between $300,000 and $400,000 -- none of which will be reimbursed by Trump's campaign.
