A school that's been on Long Island for more than a century is set to reopen next month for the first time since 2003.

The Prospect School in Hempstead has been closed because of massive structural issues. For the past 16 months, the school has undergone renovations and is ready to accept students again for the upcoming school year. The school will be the Hempstead School District's kindergarten center for 550 students.

"We're turning over a new leaf," said Board of Education President Betty Cross.

The project was funded by an $18.1 million bond and was predominantly paid for through state grants.
