New steps are being taken in Nassau to tighten oversight on county contracts.
Currently, contracts under $25,000 can be approved by County Executive Ed Mangano without legislative approval.
On Thursday, Mangano and the Republican legislative majority unveiled a plan that they say will result in greater transparency. The plan would require the Legislature to vote on all contracts over $1,000.
The Republican plan comes a little more than a week after legislative Democrats submitted their own proposal to change the county's contracting process.
The Democratic reform plan calls for legislative approval on all county contracts, and the creation of an independent inspector general position. Democratic Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams says his members will consider Mangano's plan, but won't give in on the independent inspector general.
The Legislature is expected to take up the new bill on Monday.
