A procession of firefighters and trucks from each Nassau County fire department followed the body of an Inwood volunteer firefighter who died in the line of duty last week.
An ambulance took Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Sanford Jr. from North Shore Manhasset Hospital to the medical examiner's office in East Meadow Wednesday while hundreds of firefighters stood at attention.
Sanford Jr. succumbed to injuries sustained while fighting a fire at an unoccupied house in Woodmere on Friday. The 43-year-old was found unconscious in the basement of the just renovated home on Central Avenue.
Investigators believe he fell through a collapsed floor and into the basement.
Sanford Jr. leaves behind a wife and a children. He was a 17-year veteran of the department.
Funeral arrangements for Sanford Jr. have not yet been announced.
