(AP) - Surfing promoters say New York's first ever professional surfing tournament was a huge success - but the surfers will not be returning in 2012.
Tournament sponsor Quiksilver and the Association of Surfing Professionals made the announcement on Friday. A statement said last September's tournament in Long Beach on Long Island was "a huge success for the surfers and fans with great conditions and incredible support from New Yorkers."
A spokeswoman did not elaborate on why the tour is not returning. A Long Beach city official also did not immediately comment. Surfers were challenged by unusually high waves in New York because of the effects of hurricanes churning up the Atlantic. But the weather also forced the cancellation of a nearby music festival.
Australian Owen Wright won the $300,000 first prize.
