President snubs Hempstead namesake school
Students and staff at Barack Obama Elementary School are disappointed in their namesake after representatives for the president said he can't fit a visit into his schedule.
School officials say they reached out to President Obama for the school's renaming ceremony in 2009, and then again in 2012 when he was nearby for the presidential debate at Hofstra University. He was not able to attend.
President Obama will be at a fundraiser in Garden City Thursday, about five minutes from the school.
The president of Hempstead's board of education says students will be writing personal letters to President Obama over the next few days in an effort to convince him to visit their school.
News 12 reached out to the White House for a comment on this story, but received no reply.
