There's no place for hate. That's the message students from Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington want people to hear loud and clear in honor of Bullying Prevention Month.
High school seniors Ellen Efkarpidis and Aphrodite Dimopoulos decided they wanted to do something positive during a time of social unrest. So, they started making bracelets to represent unity among everyone. Their effort is known as LERA Bracelets.
The proceeds from the bracelets go toward social justice nonprofits. The seniors say they were surprised how many people supported their message.
"It's really rewarding, especially to see people so thankful and grateful for the opportunity to be able to help. We got so much praise from the community, and it really feels great that people appreciate what we are doing," says Efkarpidis.
Dimopoulos says it feels empowering as a 17-year-old to know that you can make a difference.
