A new railyard project in Port Jefferson Station is in danger of going off the tracks.
Local leaders are stressing the need for quick action as a June 30 deadline looms to close a deal allowing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to acquire land at a Port Jefferson Station Superfund site that was formerly property of Lawrence Aviation Industries.
They say the state Department of Transportation is holding up the deal, without explanation.
Officials say the project is vital to finally electrifying the Port Jefferson LIRR line.
They're calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to urge the DOT to sign off on the agreement.
A DOT spokesman tells News 12 in a statement, "NYSDOT is in the process of delivering a free property easement to MTA in accordance with NYSDOT requirements and Suffolk County Resolution No. 980-2023 to facilitate MTA's property acquisition from the Suffolk County Land Bank at the Lawrence Aviation site. This unique and complicated process will take several months."
