A Port Jefferson man is facing charges for his involvement in a deadly accident on the New Jersey Turnpike Monday.
Police say 46-year-old Dimitrios Tseperkas was unable to stop his flatbed truck as it approached slowing traffic on the northbound express lanes. According to authorities, the truck hit a Nissan Altima and pushed the car underneath another tractor-trailer. The truck then turned over, spilling its load of bricks on the road. Three of the four passengers in the vehicle were killed, including 2-year-old Victoria Christmas. Both of Victoria?s parents died in the crash, but her 4-year-old sister survived.
Investigators say another individual, 37-year-old Norma Ryan, was killed when the truck struck her SUV as it turned over. Three other passengers in that vehicle were hospitalized with internal injuries.
Family and friends of Tseperkas say they were shocked to learn he was involved in such a terrible accident. They say he has a good heart and has always been a safe driver. Many refused to believe the accident could be Tseperkas? fault, and say something must have gone wrong mechanically.
