Authorities in Port Jefferson are utilizing golf carts for street patrols to alleviate growing gas expenses.
The village is using electric carts for parking enforcement, first aid and to dart through traffic-clogged roads. Village officials say the carts significantly cut costs.
"We charge it up overnight and the thing can go all day without additional charging," says Chief Wally Tomaszewski, Port Jefferson constable.
Port Jefferson code officer and EMT Maggie Loschiavo says the vehicles are effective to zip around in.
"It is really good for getting in and out of the parking lots especially with the meters and if any one needs help," she says.
