Mike’s Pizza on Bedford Avenue is being forced to close its doors this Tuesday after 23 years.
On Jan. 7, the pizza shop owner was given notice to vacate the property by the end of the month.
News of its closure has left residents in the area devastated about losing their favorite spot for decades.
“I love this place,” said Alexander Holder. “I've been going here for at least 15 years. This is one of the best places in the neighborhood.”
“It's like heartbreaking you know,” said the owner. “It’s not easy. I used to watch the kids growing up and now they’re more big than me. Just like family. I don't know what to do.”
Mike’s Pizza is just one of seven long-standing businesses on the Bedford block being shut down. The owner of the properties tells News12 that one new business will replace them all.
“It's just devastating,” said longtime customer Gregory Chaparro. “When me and my wife didn't want to cook on Friday nights, we came here. Monday nights the same thing. A lot of the kids here, they come here to hang out, stay out of trouble, eat, you know, at night he gives them slices and stuff like that.”
The next steps for the pizzeria are still uncertain. However, there is hope for a new location.
