A new Newsday/Siena College poll shows Republican state Sen. Jack Martins has narrowed the gap with Democrat Tom Suozzi in the race for Long Island's 3rd Congressional District.
The poll shows Suozzi with 47 percent of the vote, and Martins with 40 percent. Four weeks ago, Suozzi had a 16-point lead.
Both candidates spent the last weekend before Election Day meeting with voters in the race to fill the seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Steve Israel. The district spans the North Shore of Long Island, from eastern Queens to Commack.
Both Suozzi and Martins held rallies Sunday, and Martins also walked through a Williston Park neighborhood hoping to invigorate voters. He was the mayor of Mineola for eight years, and he says he's been working hard for the past six years as a state senator.
"We have [been] pushing back on Common Core, cutting taxes, helping businesses succeed -- that's been my priority all these years," Martins says.
Suozzi has been a lawyer and the mayor of Glen Cove, and he served as Nassau County executive from 2002 to 2009. He lost to Executive Ed Mangano in 2009 by just 386 votes.
"I know people are discouraged about what's happening in the races this year. I still believe in America and I still believe in the system, and I believe we can get good things done," Suozzi says.
Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday.
